What “custom” means in this clinic
If your arch, forefoot or alignment is the thing your shoes cannot fix, this is where it gets measured properly. A custom orthotic is a device made to your prescription, not a size. The prescription comes from your own feet, scanned in 3D at your appointment, and from watching how you load them when you walk and run. Two people with the same shoe size get two different devices, because no two feet move the same way.
An off the shelf insole can only add cushioning in a fixed shape. A prescribed device is aimed at the specific way your foot sits and moves, which is the part that is making something hurt.

Includes the gait assessment and the 3D scan.
What they are for
What we prescribe them for
Arch pain and collapse
The arch drops as you tire, one edge of the shoe wears out first, and the ache turns up after standing or running.
Ball of the foot
Burning, numbness or a bruised feeling under the forefoot, worse in tight or stiff shoes.
Heel pain, when the loading pattern is part of what keeps the tissue irritated. The running detail is on running podiatry in Sydney.
High arches and stiff feet, which spread load badly rather than too widely.
Alignment through the foot and lower limb, when it is driving pain further up the chain.
Orthotics are one tool. Plenty of people leave with shoe advice, a loading plan and no device at all. You will be told which of those you are, and why.
Or call (02) 7252 4590 and ask first.
The process

- 03Fitting and follow up.You come back to fit them and to check how they feel in the shoes you actually wear.
Two things to ask us
We would rather answer these in person than publish a number we cannot stand behind.
What the device itself would cost in your case
How long the turnaround is
Ask when you call, or at your assessment.

What this costs
The price of the first appointment is on this page. The device is quoted to you.
New patients only, at the Redfern clinic. Initial Podiatry Consult, 30 minutes, including the gait assessment, the 3D foot scan and hands on treatment where it is appropriate. No referral needed. $0 gap applies where your private health extras cover includes podiatry and you have limit remaining, which only your fund can confirm. $99 applies otherwise. We accept all health funds. No expiry date is set on this price, and it is current at 11 August 2026.
We accept all health funds. What your fund pays toward an orthotic device is set by your extras cover and your remaining limit, so ring your fund and ask what you have on podiatry and on orthotic appliances before your appointment. It is a two minute call and it changes what you decide.
$0 gap with eligible cover, otherwise $99.

Questions about orthotics
Do you make the orthotics on site?
Your 3D scan and your prescription are done here at Redfern, and the fitting happens here. Ask David where the device itself is manufactured and how long it takes, at your appointment or on the phone. We would rather answer that in person than publish a turnaround we cannot promise.
How much do custom orthotics cost?
The first appointment with the scan is $0 gap with eligible private health cover, or $99 without. The device is quoted separately once David knows what your feet need, so call (02) 7252 4590 or ask at the assessment. We do not publish a device price on this page.
Will my health fund cover them?
We accept all health funds. Cover for an orthotic appliance depends on your extras policy and your remaining annual limit, which only your fund can confirm. Ask them about podiatry and about orthotic appliances specifically.
Do I need a referral?
No. Book the assessment directly. Bring any imaging or previous orthotics with you.
Can I use them in running shoes and work shoes?
Bring every pair you need them to fit into, including work shoes and football boots, to both the assessment and the fitting. Fit depends on the shoe as much as the device, and that is easier solved with the shoes in the room.
Do I definitely need orthotics?
Possibly not. Shoes, load and strength resolve a lot of foot pain on their own. The assessment exists to work out which of those applies to you, and you will be told if a device is not the right call.
$0 gap with eligible cover, otherwise $99.
